Dogs travelling abroad
A UK pet passport is no longer needed however your pets do need to be chipped and have had their rabis jab. Prior to leaving your pet needs a general health check to obtain an animal health certificate (AHC) which can be no older than 10 days before your arrival in Europe.
It is recommended that once in Europe, if you are going to be travelling a lot, to obtain a European pet passport.
Take the necessary supply of your pet’s prescriptions – Flea, Tick and Worming.
EuroTunnel cater exceptionally well with pet travel. They have a separate check in control area where all documents are reviewed and entry permitted as long as all is in order. There is also an exercise area with agility equipment. Wonderfully clean and large giving them ample space to run and play before crossing into France.
Useful equipment for dogs
Crate – the dogs are far happier being confined along with it being much safer (make sure the crate is secured down in the event of a crash). Use a comfortable bed and a no spill water bowl. If traveling in hot climates I recommend a mounted fan and a cool mat.
When in your location I recommend a stake for securing leads and to use retractable long leads.
Dog harnesses are better when walking as you have far greater control and if your dog does slip on mountain paths you can support them by the body and not the neck. Also, I recommend using a utility belt great as they come with storage pouches for poo bags and treats and the leads can attach making hill walking much easier. I also recommend collapsible water bowls and water bladder along with a micro towel (soak in water and can be draped over the dog to keep them cool).
For hiking in the mountains on snow we have walking boots for the dogs. You need to take the time to train the dogs to wear them so allow a few weeks for this process (read the instructions on how to do this that come with them)
Dog food – take your usual food however buy what you can locally and mix so you don’t just change their food if you can’t get your usual brand.
